Art week is one of the biggest and most important events in DC to teach the kids about cultural and art values. This time the theme was Betawi Culture. The event was held for five days from the 22nd to 26th of January 2018. Let’s take a look of some of the activities!

Day 1: Getting to know the Betawi culture

On day one, the teachers introduced the Betawi culture to the students through a presentation. The teachers explained the history, culture and knick knacks of Betawi with attractive slides and videos. After break time, the activities were BTQ, reading poems and also practicing martial arts for the boys and dancing for the girls. After the practice time is over, the students made “kembang kelapa”. It’s a craft that’s usually used as a headpiece for ondel-ondel.

Day 2: A visit to Setu Perigi

On the second day, the teachers and students visited Setu Perigi. When they arrived, they were greeted with a tradition called “Palang Pintu”. It’s a tradition to welcome a guest of honor by reading poems and martial arts. Then, the local people introduced the Betawi culture and served them Betawi food. At Setu Perigi, the students also learned the basic moves of Betawi martial arts. To show their gratitude, the DC teachers and students gave the local people of Setu Perigi a souvenir.

Day 3: Making Es Selendang Mayang

The third day, the students made one of Betawi’s delicacies called Es Selendang Mayang. They invited one of the locals, Mrs. Nonon, to help them make this Betawi dessert. The students also helped with the cooking process. After that fun and excitement, they continued practicing the martial arts and dancing for a special performance.
